Bordeaux and Saint-Émilion
The regional capital, Bordeaux charms with its UNESCO-listed quays, Place de la Bourse and its water mirror. Wine bars around Rue Saint-Rémi make an ideal setting for a first date. An hour away, the Saint-Émilion hillsides unroll their great crus: visit a château, picnic among the vines and head back to the port.
Arcachon Bay, Pilat and Dordogne
On the ocean side, Arcachon Bay shelters ten oyster villages, pinasses and tastings right by the water. The Pilat Dune, the highest in Europe, offers a vertiginous view over the Arguin sandbank. To the east, the Dordogne and the Vézère unfold castles and prehistoric caves: Beynac, Castelnaud, Lascaux and Rouffignac, all excuses for a getaway.
Basque Country, Landes and Biarritz
To the south, the Landes line up surf beaches and pine forests all the way to Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the inland Basque Country, around Espelette and Sare. Pelota, chistera, chili peppers, ewe’s cheese: a unique way of life. On Lyad, members from Aquitaine share their favourite corners, from the Bordeaux right bank to the Basque villages; it is up to you to find someone to hit the road with.
